Story of a Delegate

I remember my first MUN conference like it was yesterday. MUNOB 2016 was my first conference, the one that made me fall in love with MUN deeply and irreversibly.

I joined MUN out of curiosity more than passion and I was not really interested in the training sessions at first, but somehow, somewhere along the road, the idea of attending an actual conference made its way through my mind.

So there I found myself, the day of The Opening Ceremony, standing in front of the high school, feeling absolutely terrified and wandering what I was doing there. I was overwhelmed by the whole atmosphere and although I was a student at the host high school, nothing felt familiar anymore, nothing looked the same for me. I felt like I had entered a completely different world.

I found my seat quite quickly with the help of the staff. My place was right in the back of the hall, as I represented the state of Vietnam and the countries were ordered alphabetically. As soon as the ambassadors’ speeches began, my anxiety was replaced by excitement. There were so many questions I was eager to ask, but still, I could not find the necessary courage to stand up in the middle of an audience and state my point. It just seemed like an impossible job at that time.

The moment I had to deliver my first speech will always remain one of my dearest memories. I remember exactly how anxiety and fear had taken over my body, but that was the moment when I understood that nothing bad can happen if I just talk. That was the moment when I chose to embrace the MUNOB 2016 spirit and just go with the flow.

Needless to say that the next few days have been the best days of my life so far.

While constantly debating and discussing our topics I started to see that I was standing next to some really good and well-prepared delegates, but somehow I did not feel like a first timer anymore. Soon I had the chance to find out that they were really nice people as well, kind and smart and funny and by the end of the week we had already created long lasting friendships. Now I know that MUNOB is not just a conference, it is a cultural and educational experience of the highest level.

After days of hard working and after spontaneous ideas, after amazing speeches and active debates we finally managed to come up with a complex resolution that was going to be presented in the GA. The next thing I know is that I was somehow standing in front of the delegates of the GA, with the microphone in my hands, talking. My fear was long gone.

Another important aspect which made my first conference unforgettable was the parties, but with every party I understood that we were one step closer to the closing of the conference. I remember standing in the huge hall, surrounded by people I unexpectedly got attached to. It was like the first time I had entered the high school for the Opening Ceremony, yet something was different. I was not the same person as one week before.

Now, when I close my eyes, these memories come back to me, leaving a huge smile on my face every single time. This one week of conference helped me discover who I am and who I want to be. I can say now that MUNOB 2016 had shown me how many great opportunities are out there waiting for me.
